GP REGISTRARS

All doctors who go into general practice must, after qualifying, do a special three year course. For one year of this they are attached to a practice as a Registrar and obviously that practice must be of a high standard. Here at Bradford Road the GP Registrars share in surgeries and visits and the routine surgery work as well as attending study days and tutorials. We are confident they will give our patients modern, effective and caring treatment.

TEACHING/ATTACHED DOCTORS

Occasionally newly qualified doctors, medical students or nurses may spend time with the practice as part of their training. You will always be asked if you mind their being present at your consultation. If you do they will, of course, leave.

WHAT WE DO

We don't see patients in the surgery all day, so what else do we do? There are acute home visits every day; we also visit a number of elderly and housebound people on a regular basis.

We check and sign all repeat prescriptions and sick notes which have been requested. There are frequent telephone calls asking for all sorts of advice. There is a lot of paperwork! Letters, reports and results of tests come in daily; all have to be read and acted on. We prepare referral letters to hospital consultants and clinics, and reports for insurance companies and solicitors. We have close contact with social services and prepare reports and attend conferences with them. We have daily discussions (and more formal weekly meetings) with our nurses, health visitors, and other staff - extremely important because we all work together as a team.

THE PRACTICE TEAM

Practice Manager - Is responsible for the co-ordination, organisation and management of the practice and the services it provides. If you have any comments or suggestions to make on any aspect of these services, please do not hesitate to contact her.

Receptionists/Secretaries - Our team of receptionists and secretaries have been specially trained to deal with your enquiries. In order to assess your needs they may be required to ask you for personal information. This information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Nursing Team

The practice is involved in developing an integrated nursing team, making use of their wide range of qualifications and talents. The nursing team provide a wide range of practice-based nursing services, together with the provision of specialist clinics. They are supported by three health care assistants.

Nurse Practitioner

Gareth O’Neill is a highly skilled nurse practitioner who provides a Triage Service for patients who require same day access to a clinician. He is able to prescribe medication and works closely with the Doctors and can refer you on to see a Doctor if necessary. This service is fully supported by the Doctors and gives them more time to deal with complex problems.

ATTACHED STAFF

Health Visitors - The health visitors attached to this surgery are qualified nurses who can provide specialist information, health education and advice and support for families with small children.

Community Neighbourhood Team - Care at home can be provided by the community neighbourhood team comprising nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists.

Community Nurses - Following assessment, our district nurses will provide nursing care for our acutely ill, chronically sick or terminally ill patients, within their own home. In addition to nursing care they support carers and can advise on continence problems and help with the supply of aids and equipment.
