Description

Cleo's inspirations derive from her parents' musical passions, shuffling through a record collection of classics across Motown, Reggae, Latin, and Acid Jazz. Cleo also featured on 'Give a Little Love', the official Orange Rockcorps anthem alongside Roll Deep, Wretch 32 and Aggro Santos. Cleo Sol’s arrival in the past few years has been one of the best things to happen to UK soul music in a long time, and she’s gifted us two of her outstanding albums in the past 12 months. I love the atmosphere and the concept, It remembers me sometimes to the good old days of the seventies, but in a modern way. Alongside the widespread success of Sault, we've been able to bear witness to the continued rise of core member Cleo Sol as a standout voice in the vanguard of UK soul.

A stint at a local youth centre paired with a dedicated and motivational singing teacher came together to alter Cleo's passion for singing from a hobby to a serious profession at the age of 16, and she began song-writing and honing her vocals on a weekly basis, later performing at monthly showcases. The partnership with Davinche led to tracks with Tinie Tempah on 'Tears', Wretch 32's 'Dancefloor', Davinche's 'Hero' and 'Riding for Love' alongside Bashy. Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. This neo-soul gem executes such a whirlwind of progression with confessional lyricism that harkens back to her earlier work, and simple yet moving piano to spotlight Sol's incredible voice. The music, the lyrics and even more the vocals on this record are purposeful and so well placed that your body can fell the magic that was created in the studio. Took my original copy back due to the static noises and crackling that peaks around the vocals mainly on side B, 2nd copy does exactly the same in the same places so must be a bad pressing which is a huge shame for such a good album at such a premium too. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since.

Small embellishments like the birdsong on ‘Golden Child (Jealous)’ and the tape hiss on the introspective piano ballad ‘Old Friends’ lend the album a looser, more spontaneous vibe that draws even more emotion out of Cleo Sol’s casually evocative voice. The slightly cooler, more beautiful 'girl-next-door', Cleo, loves fashion and she says her style is influenced by her Dad's 'rockabilly', mixed with grunge and 80's era music; "If all else fails, it's all about the big hair and big earrings", she says.

Clearly influenced by neo-soul acts like Erykah Badu and Solange but also has strong roots in classic 70s female soul like Minnie Riperton. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Comprised of 11 tracks crafted from threads of '70s jazz and '90s neo-soul - the album is perfect for those that love Jill Scott, Solange, Shaolin Soul, Minnie Ripperton and Lauryn Hill. Cleo quickly became the singer in the family, jostling for attention amongst seven other siblings, she received a second hand karaoke player from her mum which gave her a platform to display her early talents to her musical family.

In celebration of its two-year anniversary, she tweeted: "Two years since we released mother into the world, thank you for embracing me, and seeing me, writing my truth is sometimes difficult, but it’s freeing, and having you support me pushes me to be brave. With an impressive discography already under her belt, including collaborations with renowned artists such as Jorja Smith and Little Simz, Cleo Sol continues to make waves in the industry. Akin to millions of other young girls, Cleo loved the Spice Girls and wanted to grow up to be flame-haired, Geri. Produced by Inflo, who worked with Danger Mouse on Michael Kiwankua's last album Kiwanuka, he gives the record a similar nostalgic sophistication and soul. Straying not too far from the classicist neo-soul vibe of her prior Forever Living Originals efforts, Heaven is more natural refinement than radical departure and all the better for it.

Truly capturing the best of modern soul with wholly justified comparisons to Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and D'Angelo alike, this stunning album has future classic written all over it. It was Stevie Wonder's 'Don't You Worry Bout a Thing' that struck the loudest chord with Cleo as a youngster discovering music. Following last year's universally adored Rose In The Dark, Cleo Sol is back with an album that challenges its predecessor's supremacy.
