About this deal

They are selected based on genuine mentions and recommendations made by Alex Honnold in various public platforms. Already one of the most famous adventure athletes in the world, Honnold has now been hailed as "the greatest climber of all time" ( Vertical magazine).

I enjoy reading books on mountaineering and climbing even though I would never be able to do the incredible things these athletes do.And all at once the sky darkens with a swarm of buzzwords – iconic – quantum leap – paradigm shift – plus of course the one I already deployed, the ever upward step-change. I enjoyed reading about a subject that I previously knew nothing about and really had little interest in. I would liken it myself to the movements of a great cargo ship, so easy to steer in the endless ocean, but prone to serious problems in the confines of a foreign harbor where obstacles abound. Neurodiversity: sometimes we find the other person's mental processes hard to fathom because they are just so different.

For climbers who have been paying attention, there is also very little new information, so far as I have read, which you wouldn't already know. Exhilarating, brilliant and dangerous, there is a purity to Alex's climbs that is easy to comprehend, but also impossible to fathom; in the last forty years, only a handful of climbers have pushed themselves as far, ‘free soloing’ to the absolute limit of human capabilities. He was drawn to climbing in the way that very special athletes at times are drawn to their sports, especially to solitary sports such as surfing, skiing, or obviously, climbing.I received this as an eBook from PENGUIN GROUP Dutton via NetGalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review of the title.

Honnold's] ability to connect with a larger audience and bring a humble perspective to his many accomplishments makes him a great ambassador to the sport…[R]eading the vivid descriptions captured by Honnold and Roberts will surely cover the book's pages in a fine layer of palm sweat. Anyone interested in tedious descriptions of climbing films Alex has been in from the co-author, or a few quotes from him and others (often taken from magazines) spun up into pages on uneventful sponsored climbing trips or other mishaps? Sadly, many of them end up dead by the end of the book because they make one mistake pushing the limits of their capabilities. Many action sports athletes come off like your kid brother in college at best, but Honnold came off on social media like John Brinckerhoff Jackson or R.We concluded that these forms of the sport are pushing boundaries and taking the element of risk to a place where we as a company are no longer willing to go," the company wrote in an open letter. It's clear the author is starry-eyed when it comes to Honnold, so I felt like I was reading a sort of love letter at times, like it was too personal. Again, when it's all over, we're still left wondering whether climbing is, or is not, a form of insanity. His recently published memoir, Alone On The Wall, offers a glimpse into the life and psyche of a guy who is rich beyond imagination for a dirtbag climber, but also still chooses to live in a van. This is a very strong companion piece if you enjoyed the films Visual ,you now get to hear it from inside Alex’s mind every move mapped .

Written by an accomplished fellow climber, this story of the historic rope-free climb of Yosemite's El Capitan by Alex Honnold is fascinating and full of interesting info about the technical aspects of the climb, as well as the climbing world in general. I began reading it earlier this year, got about 20% into it, and lost interest, put it down where it sat unhappily for the next six months. Later, Sanni McCandless fancies him at a book talk, moves in on him, and is the heroine of the 'Free Solo' film. Followed by another step up, and a few thousand more – to make a climb that changes our whole idea of what climbers can climb. Coincidentally, just as I was finishing this book, the National Geographic movie, "Free Solo" was being screened at a local theater, and I watched the film, which is a perfect complement to this book.A veteran of the North Face climbing team and contributor to National Geographic, Synnott weaves in his own amateur and professional experiences with poignant insight and wit. The very end of the book is incredibly fast-paced as describes the climb and the emotions going through all of those watching him ascend. There is plenty of coverage of the dangers of the sport as well, including a number of stories of those who perished during their climbs. Our goal is to provide readers with an authentic insight into the reading preferences of influential individuals.
