About this deal

The singer is finally able to look at herself with affection: she looks at her struggles, at her strengths, at the lost battles and the challenges she overcame. This is the heart of the album: Lissie opens up about all of her feelings all at once, allowing herself to hurt, burn, fight, “get out of the darkness and go back into the light”.

L: When the pandemic started, I was actually living with my ex-partner, who was a farmer, like an actual organic farmer. But it was REALLY awesome to not only be able to have these women I admired voices on my record, but to have it be on the songs that they helped create. The latter song gives Lissie liberty for complicated feelings, moving on without having to deny or question the past.

AH: Sometimes, though, there is that rush of hearing something new, or new to you, and it just does knock you out, and that’s great. With references ranging from Fleetwood Mac and Florence + the Machine to Bon Iver, it’s her most emotionally resonant and personal record.

L: And I know there’s an example like that that I should be giving you, and I cannot, for the life of me, pull it from my brain right now. When the pandemic started spreading, Lissie was in her Iowa farm dealing with an impactful breakup: she decided to use the time wisely, learning to know herself better and, through connecting with nature, connecting with the deepest and more hidden parts of herself. As we all know, to go through grieving is to walk on a path that is not linear: I Hate This is a desperate song that comes right after wise, mature anthems that paint the picture of a person that is learning how to move on and become better.

All the songs on this album were written by Lissie, but it has been endowed with a strong collective co-writing effort which included Madi Diaz, Morgan Nagler, and Natalie Hemby. So I think as a musician, what I really hope, even aside from how the critics respond, or the industry, it’s more important to me, I think, that the people who get this music can then use it and apply it to their own experiences and heartaches and process, because I think that’s just such a gift. In most cases we do not send full replacements for these types of issues, unless the damage is severe.

We are delighted to offer an exclusive pressing of her wonderful album on "Sage + White Marble" vinyl. I’m kinda considered maybe more pop or indie rock, but I definitely think, just by virtue of my life and who I am and where I live, there’s definitely twinges of folk and Americana and country. Otherwise, you’ll just box it up somewhere toxic in your body, and it’ll just follow you around forever. Throughout it all, Lissie pushes her personal musical boundaries, whether it be through the funkiness of Chasing The Sun, the dreamy rock of Lonesome Wines, the wistful nostalgia of I Hate This, the pacey passion of Hearts On Fire, the empowerment of Yellow Roses, or the bombast of title track Carving Canyons. Night Moves by contrast is upbeat, perhaps the poppiest moment of the album, with a wandering bassline and a steady groove.I get overwhelmed sometimes about how much I want to listen to something new, and I just don’t get the chance sometimes.

These issues include: excessively warped vinyl, significantly scratched or scuffed records, excessive noise and pops during playback, and locked grooves. The singer is angry at her past lover, she thinks about all the wrong things he did and she hopes he’s suffering only at the thought of her. After a week or so of not-so-cryptic teasing, French electro behemoths Justice have officially announced their new album Hyperdrama, simultaneously dropping not one but two lead tracks which have landed with a resounding THUD. It’s almost impossible not to think about Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac when listening to this record: the classic guitar that accompanies the singer’s voice creating a calming yet atmosphere, the harmonies, her deep, warm tone… It’s familiar, but in the best way: it’s comforting, it’s homey. So I’ve kind of been back into The Mountain Goats, realizing that’s a good reminder, I bumped into him in the hallway, I gotta get back into them. I’m just so glad that that was able to work out, because it just adds more life and more perspective. When I was listening to “Night Moves,” one of the singles – that could be a long lost Fleetwood Mac song, between the feel of it and your vocals in it.
