About this deal

I actually hadn’t read anything by Ian McEwan before this but I liked the sound of it, it’s absolutely nothing like anything I’ve read before. Our main man, Charlie, purchases a synthetic human, and when his girlfriend Miranda moves in, they have an interesting relationship that leads to some questionable moral dilemmas.

The relationships she had with others (especially men)and the way she communicated with them was just painful to read about though. I’m not sure how to describe this book, although it broaches topics of privilege, heartbreak, race and motherhood, it also is quite an unlikely story in some ways.

A journey through the people, places, and things that inspire Clare and her brand, this vibrantly-hued volume, printed with a luxe cloth hardcover and ribbon bookmarked, celebrates fashion, design, travel, and creative communities alike. Victor Arwas was one of the leading scholars and experts in the fine and decorative arts from the late nineteenth century onwards. I don’t think I realised the nature of the material until I started reading it, but it has a similar vibe to My Dark Vanessa. Indeed the whole book is crammed with symbols, representations, discourses, conjunctures, meanings, remembered festivals, carnivals and rituals that make it read like a translation of a contemporary piece of French ethnology. On a whim, she books a three week trip to Paris where she discovers that you can escape your surroundings and you can escape your family (temporarily), but you can't escape yourself.

In la France profonde the signs are more exotic, as John Lewis-Stempel discovers one February morning when his horse crashes through an electrified fence and bolts into a walnut orchard. A heartbreaking read that is centred around the AIDS epidemic in the 80s, The Great Believers is set in Chicago and Paris, following both the stories of Yale, a struggling gay artist, and Fiona, a woman trying to track down her estranged daughter she lost to a cult. I did think it was a great read overall, some of the essays were like nothing I’ve ever come across before. For many years a farmer in England, John Lewis-Stempel yearned once again to live in a landscape where turtle doves purr and nightingales sing, as they did almost everywhere in his childhood. In this new book, in which he confides in us for the first time, Pierre Hermé tells us about the origins and the demands of his passion: from his thirst for learning, which led him to the farthest reaches of the planet, to his encounters with the craftsmen who have marked his career. My first read from Curtis Sittenfield, although I have since bought a couple more from her because I loved Rodham so much. How many times will a woman not use her good sense to figure a way out of said predicament but rather phone it in, again three times on average.

But as three species of lizard emerged from hibernation to join the party, he realises that’s how you know winter has passed in Charente-Maritime. Pair your drink with dinner or light bites from our rooftop SkyBar and Club Lounge menu and soak in the city lights as you unwind. Last year was the first year I set myself an actual reading goal, although I do usually read about 30 books a year so I wasn’t exactly aiming too high. I connected so much with her feelings and internal conflict between what she wants and what is “expected” of her. What happens when these ideals have been so ingrained that even the shadows and whispers of your long lost father haunts your every day life? Having recently been orphaned, the narrator is struggling with where she’s at in her life – despite having a great apartment and a good job.
