About this deal

I bought this book in preparation for uni and it has been very helpful in 'reading between the lines' and clarifying strong and weak arguments. The book also very cleverly highlights many 'pitfalls' of writing which (most) people tend to make in their writing without realising. These resources are designed to support teaching and learning when using this textbook and are available at no extra cost. The 4th edition features a new section on argument mapping techniques, which help readers to visualize the structures of an argument. Her other titles include The Study Skills Handbook, Critical Thinking Skills, Skills for Success, The Macmillan Student Planner, The Exam Skills Handbook and Mindfulness for Students.

Written by Stella Cottrell, leader in the field with over a million book sales to date, this text breaks down a complex subject into easily understood blocks, providing easy-to-follow, step-by-step explanations and practice activities to develop understanding and practise your skills at each stage. Finally, it triggered me to explore the subject of critical thinking more broadly, by referring to similar books. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

People later in their careers may find it a bit basic but you can consider it as a sort of reference. I found that a lot of it was really just common sense, but the book spells out what common sense actually is in the context of responding to written arguments, which is helpful and made me realise quite how much is involved in a process that I previously took for granted.Especially recommended for university students, particularly at the start of their undergraduate degree as it is vitally important to develop these critical skills before reaching your final year and have to complete your dissertation.
