About this deal

I know the books aren’t about *romance* but to feature it semi-heavily in all the books, I was just a tad bummed at how the relationships are handled. Which Nahid should he choose to follow, the one he has sworn allegiance to or the one who holds his corrupted, shuddering heart? Through her medical and community work, Nahri had developed a following there, and feels responsible to her followers for trying to repair the damage her mother has done. How the trauma of conquest persists on occupied people for generations after the main event has plenty of resonance with the world today.

Empire of Gold picks up after the ultimate, bloody war and harrowing confrontation that ended Kingdom of Copper. The ending was ultimately satisfying, without getting into spoilery territory, I appreciated that it fitted with the overall story and there was no everything gets wrapped up in a big neat bow, all the characters end in a good place but it’s clear that there is still a long way to go before Ali and Nahri’s vision for a united Daevabad comes to pass, which I felt was very realistic for this world, the tribes aren’t going to abandon their beliefs about the other tribes overnight.I seriously don’t want to give away any spoilers so I’m just going to chuck a few random thoughts and feelings around and let them land where they may. I live in Vienna, Austria and, apart from reading, I enjoy movies, video games, thunderstorms, eternally bickering couples, coffee, and anything made of chocolate.

Nahri and Ali are recuperating from their battles and recent escape, reconnecting with some old friends and family, including some very unexpected family, and trying to figure out what to do with their lives. There’s a lot of similarities between them in this respect, they both straddle two distinct worlds (Ali with the Marid and the Djinn, Nahri with her human and Daeva heritage) so it was interesting to see them embracing the sides of their heritage that they’ve not necessarily ignored but been unable to explore fully up till this point. I don't want you to worry because I only recommend tools and products that I personally use and love and I always have my readers' best interest at heart. I don’t want to get too far into spoilers, but there are a few moments near the end of The Empire of Gold where other characters that we’ve barely heard from previously step into the story.Well, everyone is back in force and then some and I’m pleased to say that the character growth is great. Really, every character in this book – well, the main cast really – had some awesome character transformations, flaws and all. In all, I’m tired of falling madly for male characters who have gone through Hell and back and don’t end up with their loves. There’s quite a bit of focus on both Nahri and Ali discovering their heritage in this book, which was really great.

If you had asked me to list out my most anticipated books of 2021, The Galaxy, And The Ground Within certainly would have made the list. In the end, we have a broken phalanx of characters who try to rise from the ashes and learn from the past, but despite their manifest good intentions they are nonetheless human and flawed. The book annotations include character and plot insights, historical and cultural references, and other notes. Eons he’ll be out there, generations and generations after Nahri and Ali and Muntadhir and Jamsid and Zaynab are gone, alone.Empire of Gold is the pitch perfect conclusion to the expansive fantasy trilogy that has captured my heart and mind over the past few years.
