About this deal

However, it's the way they use some of the character tropes and subvert them that kept me interested especially how the main character views everything. As the author notes in the afterword, it’s unrealistic to think that his problems would simply end after he passes a single test.

Hirata, Ike, and Horikita attempt to back up Sudō on the topic, but Chabashira disregards their attempts by stating that the matter has already been settled. It’s clear as day that most of Class D thought the same way as me, even if they were trying to be nice about it. It’s telling that none of their classmates made an effort to intervene during the first month when those boys were at their least motivated.Hirata contests this for a bit, but it is an unchanging fact that they have lost all of their points. There is a small argument, but the older students leave after taking pity on them after learning that the two of them are students from Class 1-D, much to their confusion. Honestly, for a first volume of a light novel, many parts of the story feel unlike many light novels that are written today (I’m looking at you isekai/otherworld/fantasy novels) and feel more like a traditional light novel meant for easier reads among young adults/teenagers, despite some of the concepts likely not presenting themselves well among the younger demographics. Horikita states that she's lost interest in teaching them further as she sees it as a hassle to teach them anything moving forward. She brings up her desire to be friends with everyone, to which Kiyotaka asks if she and Horikita knew one another before coming to high school.

So yeah, I feel like it’s more helpful to cover and review policies in case-to-case basis rather than simplistic judgement that these narratives provides. Even as early as volume 2, it’s strongly hinted that people are allocated to Class D if they have “the most room to grow. A person who intentionally scores just half the points of what he is required to in every test he takes just to avoid trouble. classroom-of-the-elite-light-novel-volume-1-review

Review copy provided by Seven Seas Entertainment. People like to talk about equality as a platitude, but the harsh truth is that humans aren’t born equal, and there are invisible forces preventing the ideal from becoming reality.Three weeks after the start of the school year, behaviour in the class has been getting progressively worse, with students being tardy, skipping periods, speaking during lessons, sleeping, or using electronic devices during class-time. The students begin to quarrel among themselves about the truth of the point system and their status as the leftovers of the school. With these two hierarchies established, it’s not hard to make a connection to capitalism or other economic systems that thrive on the same premises. After meeting Suzune Horikita and Kikyō Kushida, two other students in his class, Kiyotaka's situation begins to change. When the possibility is brought up that their expulsion would raise the class average, a part of me genuinely thought, “It’s more efficient to just cut them loose than try to turn them into good students.
