I’ve applied a more conscientious method to working on creative or analytical work early in the day, and preferably early in the week. The side benefits of doing this successfully are that resisting the urge to heed distractions helps strengthen your prefrontal cortex, and that once you’re actually 10 minutes into working on your task, it’s easier to continue working on it. I would think that in the development of the book he’d look for studies and examples in his podcast guests at least. Balancing explore vs decide reminded me strongly of Algorithms to Live By by Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths. He offers tips on getting in the mood to do certain tasks, generating ideas, getting unstuck, and continually making progress.

That does not say he didnt created a good podcast or is not a good graphic designer or dont have interesting life - his narative about himself just dont corelate with the reality in my eyes (I dont know all Davids work - to this time I read Heart To Start, this book and Davids newsletters, heard some podcast episodes). Kadavy explains that we often cite the concept that we all have the same 24 hours per day which can lead us to falsely assume that they are created equal and we can simply map out the hours to schedule all that we must do.

I’m no GTD expert, and I think GTD needs to be modified for each, but I think he’s talking about a Tickler File, not an inbox.

This book was part memoir, part personal classification and management of creative moods, and some mixes of the two.
