About this deal

I think what truly made me fall for Ely and Wyatt as characters but also as a couple, is the exploration of their own identities and their art. They share the common thread of substance abuse and photography, but their journeys before that, Ely growing up in Orthodox Judaism, and Wyatt as a trans man (seriously, the way transness is looked at/explored in this book alone makes it worth it), are so interesting and given so much depth. A SHOT IN THE DARK is as much a character exploration as it is a romance, and it’s such a stronger romance for it. Even the tropier elements are given depth, though sometimes they are just funny. Truss has a lot of fun at the expense of conceited but idiotic policemen, pretentious and narcissistic theatre folk and so on, and I enjoyed the first half of the book a lot. However, it did begin to pall a bit; the plot moves slowly and rather predictably and the comedy is so broad-brush that it lost its appeal rather. Inspector Steine's colossal idiocy and vanity became just annoying and the rest of the developments weren't funny enough to maintain the book. I know that it is intentionally absurdly pantomimic and a parody of old-fashioned police dramas, but even Lynn Truss couldn't keep it going for me.

Throughout the book the author is a strong presence, becoming almost a character in the story itself through use of parentheticals and conversational tendencies that read as if someone is talking to the reader directly as they might relate an occurance or tell a story. There is a strong feeling of being in a room with the author, perhaps as a stand-up comedy routine is being delivered. As a person with addiction issues who knows other people with addiction issues, I can say that of course we are all different. So while some may find Ely and Wyatt’s experience with addiction relatable, it didn’t quite ring true for me, like the author was going through the motions of what she thinks these characters would feel without totally understanding how addiction works. I was also put off by how heavily AA and NA (and, by extension, the language common to those organizations) were featured in this book. While these organizations have worked for thousands, they are not the only path to recovery and sometimes not even the best path to recovery, and I am wary of media that implies that it is.

Most shots in the dark miss. Scientists learn this early in their career – most of the guesses we make as to how things work will turn out to be wrong. In fact, a proper understanding of science requires thorough knowledge of all the ways in which humans deceive themselves into believing things that are not true. In fact, most shots in well-lit conditions (informed by prior knowledge) miss. Ignoring prior knowledge results in chances that are all but hopeless. A Shot in the Dark is an emotionally powerful romance novel about two people finding love after struggling with addiction--ultimately discovering what it means to be completely and unapologetically themselves. So while there were more minor reactions to DTwP, there was no increase in seizures or encephalopathy compared to DTaP, which supports the conclusion that DTwP does not increase the risk of these neurological events. However, a Canadian study found a decrease in hospital admissions for febrile seizures following the transition to DTaP, suggesting that DTwP did increase the risk of febrile seizures. It should be noted, however, that febrile seizures do not generally increase the risk of developing epilepsy or permanent neurological damage.Ohms . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 79 They really put you into the head and life of these characters so you were able to not only see how and why they got to where they were, but the emotional impact it had on everyone. And made you empathize with not only the main characters, but the family and friends that were affect as well. A captivating love letter to self-love, healing, and finding one’s place in Judaism.”– Jewish Book Council It was an interesting read, one that sorta defies a rating because I enjoyed it to some degree definitely, I found it quite poignant and touching with intriguing themes and fascinating characters, but as a romance it didn’t necessarily wow me. I think this is better labeled as Contemporary rather than Contemporary Romance, and if you approach the novel as more of an emotional character study than anything it’s quite excellent.

Elisheva Cohen has just returned to Brooklyn after almost a decade. The wounds of abandoning the Orthodox community that raised her, then shunned her because of her substance abuse, are still painful. But when she gets an amazing opportunity to study photography with art legend Wyatt Cole, Ely is willing to take the leap. This book was truly everything I could have wanted or expected and more. A deeply passionate romance where I truly believed in the connection between the two main characters, and also an exploration of some deeply personal and heavy topics. A SHOT IN THE DARK is not a swoony, lighthearted romance, but that doesn’t make it any less romantic. The characters are so messy and real, and I couldn’t put the book down. Truly could not recommend reading this book enough. Thank you so much to Ballantine, Netgalley, and PRH Audio for providing advanced copies of this! All thoughts and opinions are still my own.

There clearly is an increased risk of a convulsion after diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis immunization but no evidence that this produces brain injury or is a forerunner of epilepsy. Studies have also not linked immunization with either sudden infant death syndrome or infantile spasms. stars. Basically once I started this book it was impossible to put down. So hard to put down in fact that I got distracted reading outside and ended up with a weird embarrassing sunburn. This is meant to be taken as high praise.
