About this deal

The story is framed around a classroom essentially having show and tells of each important animal that a child in the class has selected. This was a nice way to frame what is essentially a non-fiction book, getting into some fascinating detail on the uniqueness and importance of each animal on display in the book, and why they are important to other animals, and humans as well. It makes sense then that they might be amongst the most important plant life to humans and ecosystems too

Sharks and tigers as apex predators, keeping their food webs balanced and, in doing so, enabling greater species diversity?

Animals Used To Make Products & Medicine

Fish farming and aquaculture which is growing and even surpassing traditional agriculture in terms of total food production, also has it’s downsides. Both these animals dig tunnels in and naturally till the soil – helping air and water (and nutrients) to get into the soil and also near plant roots. An excellent childrens book that will really suit an inquisitive mind of between 6-12 years of age. Nectar eating bats can also help pollinate, and, bat droppings help in seed dispersal and helping plants grow and stay diverse.

Since] 1997, these [rats] have helped clear 13,200 mines from minefields in Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola, and, most recently, in Cambodia. There might be an argument that action would need to be taken if any of the animal species or groups of animals on this are becoming endangered, threatened with extinction, or population numbers declining significantly. Menhaden might look unimpressive at first glance but these little fish are vitally important as a food source for many animals further up the food chain. What is the most important animal of all?’,asks a teacher of a young class after they’ve spent a term learning about animals big and small. They all have different suggestions. George thinks it’s elephants, Nimmie puts forward bees, Seb votes for sharks and Kai nominates beavers. Others namr bats, tigers and even krill. As they make the case for their chosen animals, the children explain just why they’re so important, describing the effect they have on the environment and fellow creatures. Illustrations are perfectly combined with photos, fact boxes and text to demonstrate just how interconnected is our world and its ecosystems. The book provides a wealth of information presented clearly and in a way that will inspire young readers. The final spreads explain ‘keystone species’ and provide a glossary and ‘Find our more’ section. A very impressive and well-thought-out information book. They are, in effect, the world's recyclers. Yet despite this many species are facing extinction from pollution and agricultural activities. Source: Hans Hillewaert/Wikimedia Commons 4. Menhaden Are Vital To Marine Food Chains

There are of course exploitations of using animals for income, but there are also ethical ways to make money from animals such as ethical elephant sanctuaries in South East Asia, or ethical reserves for safaris in Africa. Cyanobacteria, like many other microscopic organisms, can be found in all conceivable habitats around the world. Think of somewhere, and you can bet you'll find some form of cyanobacteria there. In the US in particular – the long term population numbers of honey bees are not thought to be major concern yet.

Coral reefs are both incredibly beautiful structures but also provide vital roles in the local ecosystems. Reefs provide sheltered lagoons behind them and act as a foundation for complex food webs. They are responsible for around half of the world’s oxygen production via photosynthesis, and obviously other animals and humans breath in this oxygen. Penny Worms has teamed up with illustrator Hannah Bailey and the British Ecological Society to create this clever mix of fact and fiction. The Most Important Animal of All follows a class of children, who supported by their teacher, discuss and debate which is indeed the most important animal of them all. They can also be studied to indicate to scientists what is going on in the environment and with the climate.

Changes in sea level and temperatures the world over are threatening the future of many coral reefs the world over. Dapo Adeola, Tracy Darnton, Joseph Coelho and Chitra Soundar are among the 19 authors and illustrators longlisted for the Inclusive Books for Child... In this beautifully illustrated picture book, a teacher challenges her class to come to their own conclusions about the most important animal of all. Seven children champion an animal for the top spot. Is it… Following a semester of zoological studies, a teacher asks their students to name the most important animal. Tan-skinned George proposes elephants (“Even their poo is useful!”), brown-skinned Nimmie goes for bees because they’re “like fairies for farmers,” and five other classmates chime in with candidates of their own: sharks, beavers, bats, tigers, and krill. In the end, Worms leaves it up to readers to decide, but as the chosen creatures are all keystone species and the children make compelling cases for their choices, a definitive answer isn’t obvious, and they are not likely to actually settle on one…but readers will be inspired to mull the topic themselves. To keep the conversation going, the author introduces four more keystone species at the end (wolves, sea otters, corals, and sea stars). Bailey places painted images of a diverse class led by a brown-skinned teacher in a tiger suit and renditions of wildlife in natural settings alongside bright, clear photographic portraits (of the animals) and adds helpful schematic views of flower parts next to three bee species and an Antarctic marine food web. (This book was reviewed digitally.)Also, although we don’t list them specifically in the guide below, plant-like organisms like algae might become more important in the future if they are used for bioenergy, and for biofuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (as one example) Numerous studies show dogs are beneficial to our mental health, and can even support people with mental health issues like depression, anxiety and more. Ants also participate in seed harvesting and carrying, and kill off pest species like the Fly, flea, and bed bug eggs, larvae, or nymphs
