About this deal

Morino launched the manga in Kodansha's Monthly Dessert magazine in December 2017. Kodansha will publish the manga's 13th compiled book volume on June 13. The manga has over 3.8 million copies in circulation. The manga won the Best Shōjo Manga award in Kodansha's 45th Manga Awards in 2021. Trial-Period Dating: Oblivious to Love Hotaru is baffled and initially turns Serial Romeo Hananoi down when he confesses his love to her and asks to date her after talking to her for the first time yesterday, but after she sees how much effort he puts into getting her to fall for him, she proposes that they date until Christmas in a few weeks, so she can find out if even she can fall in love just like everyone else. I think what really helps Hotaru break the mold of falling into toxicity is the fact that she herself got some trauma that she’s working through from when she’s younger. She makes it clear she isn’t entirely perfect and that she’s just trying to make the best of her world rn Hotaru Hinase is a first-year high school student who treasures her family and friends above all else. Unable to understand romance, she decides she will be content living without the experience of falling in love.

At first he might seem a bit "obsessed" with her, but truth to be told, I've read TONS of shoujo and this is nth in comparison with the usual trope. This is the first time I am crying while reading manga that is not supposed to make me cry. I am similar with Hananoi-kun, "heavy" and have tendency to be manipulative but it's not because I want to be like that, maybe I just don't know how to love someone normally and too anxious for them to disappear because of my past. So yeah, this manga really touch my heart and I honestly need someone like Hotaru in my life, I hope I will meet someone like her one day. I really really love this manga. It has a lot of sweetness and fluff for sure, but it's definitely a lot deeper than it lets on. I have a lot of joy of seeing them work through their relationships, both past and present, and I really am excited to see what new development happens next. Personally, I think this is one of the few stories in which a true happy ending could be that the protagonists do not end up together (Because, in my opinion, I feel that Hotaru is not really in love with Hananoi, rather she is curious to experience what What love really is. While on Hananoi's part, I think it's better for him to learn on his own that his view of love is completely incorrect).

Another con in A Condition Called Love is that there are two side characters each with their own crushes that involve age gaps. The first being only a three-year age gap; but it’s still a college student falling for a high school student… which just feels kinda weird. These two characters individually are amazing and lovable, but I don’t think there needs to be a romance between them. I'm used to reading/watching questionable stuff and often find enjoyment in it, but something about this manga set my fight or flight response off from the beginning. I couldn't exactly tell you what it was. The male lead? I've read worse. The weird way in which his actions get portrayed as cute? I've unfortunately also read worse. The way he contrasts against everyone else's blandness? I think PLOT TWISTS ARE INSAAAANE, they give foreshadowing a bit, but y'all can't expect it 😵 I was SHOOKT, in an ineffable way lol

It’s also nice to see how mature our main characters are in A Condition Called Love, while still having the personalities and traits that high schoolers should. They are responsible enough to take their relationship at a slow and consensual pace, but still have that shyness and desire to be closer with their partner. We can see this maturity in Hananoi too, since he worked hard while his parents were away and was able to understand that his parents where good people (therefore, he didn’t hate them). Yet we still see how their absence affected him as a child and as a young, growing person; with a bit of immaturity and lots of clinginess as a result. The main characters in shoujos are often written to be perfect with occasional small mistakes; it was exciting to see characters written with big mistakes and bigger negative feelings like real people actually act. They learn from it over time and grow as individuals. Our male lead in A Condition Called Love kind of gave himbo golden-retriever-boyfriend energy at first. He’s a handsome character who wants to do anythingto make his crush happy: even changing his appearance or going very out of his way for someone he just met. However, as more is revealed you begin to get creeped out by his character a bit. He tries a little too hard and cares a little too much for Hotaru. His character seems desperate for love, and I felt kind of bad for him (and scared of him), especially at the beginning of this story. What I like about this manga so far is that, even though the beginning of their relationship is rather sudden, it takes it's time to slowly but constantly develop further. Especially from the view of Hotaru, exploring what it feels like to fall in love with someone. The problem I have with it is that Hananoi is continually giving me stalker vibes. He literally knows nothing of Hotaru, yet he's immediately so obsessed with her that he'll do anything for her, such as search for her barrette in a snowy field all night. When they're alone, he throws her against the floor and looms over her threateningly, because he's just so into her he can't control himself. He'll Im honestly confused on how to feel about this manga, I think it has a good premise, 2 love interests who are honest about their feelings and intentions from the start and work through their issues together, and the romantic scenes and such are what you expect from your usual shoujo, its got a good amount of humor too. But i don't really get what the author has in mind for the male lead, Hananoi anymore.

If you enjoy the heartwarming and romantic vibes of “A Condition Called Love,” you might also find delight in “ My Little Monster.” Both mangas explore the complexities of relationships, blending humor and genuine emotions to create compelling narratives. “ My Little Monster” shares a similar charm with its focus on an unlikely romantic connection between two contrasting characters, offering a mix of sweet moments and comedic elements that fans of “A Condition Called Love” are likely to appreciate. Feelings are dealt with realistically and sensibly in the manga, at least so far. From the way things are going I also do not expect weird inconsistencies nor expect characters to suddenly make questionable decisions that cause readers to wonder if the characters suddenly did a 180 and became ridiculously stupid. I feel that even if issues do come up for our little couple down the road, it will be resolved satisfactorily. All Take and No Give: Heavily explored as this is the kind of situation Hananoi sets up with his romantic interests so that they will grow to need him, never leave him, and become his. In sum, he love bombs his partners with what he believes to be ideal boyfriend behavior and expects the same level of devotion in return. Naturally, this overbearing approach is resoundly rejected by every one of his past girlfriends. Hotaru rejects this too and tells him that if only one person in a relationship can be happy with the other continuously sacrificing their own desires, interests, and health for them, she doesn't ever want to fall in love. She insists on Hananoi being more demanding and upfront with his emotional needs so that they can have a balanced relationship. The manga was first published in print in Dessert in December of 2017 and online in 2020 via the online manga reading platform for the parent company, Kodansha USA. The series has seen widespread success and was nominated for the Kodansha Manga Award in the shoujo category for the first time in 2020, winning the award the following year. A TV anime adaptation was announced in June 2023 to premiere in 2024. The adaptation, produced by East Fish Studio will begin airing in April 2024 and star Kana Hanazawa as Hotaru and Chiaki Kobayashi as Hananoi.I know his behavior is kinda stalkerish but I also know he also try to limit himself, his feeling is genuine, and this is what the female lead see but many reader fail to see. Their relationship is far from toxic because she knows how to make his world wider, make him change and compromise while at the same time the male lead also help her to understand how to understand love and experience new things. Their relationship is trial and error but they communicate well, compromise and change to be better. Their relationship feels real. The real star of the show though is Hotaru, the main female lead. Sweet, caring, and exceptionally considerate, and someone who cares deeply about her family and friends. Someone whose silliness is a different brand of cutesy compared to many other shoujo leads I've seen. She has an aura that almost feels like going into a relaxing hot bath -- seeing her just soothes me. It's also not very often to see a character who loves food so explicitly that isn't played off as a joke, and as a fellow food-lover who knows how much it can bring people together, I think that's really wonderful. And more than that, she's a natural counter for Hananoi's unhealthy tendancies; setting boundaries, asking for what the other wants, so on and so forth. "If love means that only one of us gets to be happy, then screw love!" she says in the first chapter, and I think it's that worldview that is what pushes Hananoi towards a healthier path. Hotaru and Hananoi are in a relationship, but Hotaru's coworker Yao once again has romantic feelings for her. This later ends up a Love Dodecahedron since Hotaru's other coworker develops feelings for Yao, but she is all too aware of his feelings for Hotaru.
