Aesthetics: Fans are never the most attractive things, but this one is the best-looking we’ve seen. Its modern, bladeless design and large cooling loop makes for a talking point. The bold, contemporary look might not be to everyone’s taste, but it fits in well with my modern white kitchen units. I also prefer the gold finish you get with the heater/cooler model more than the silver of the pure cooling types. The remote control sits neatly on the top, fixed with a magnet, so you won’t lose it. There’s a screen on the body which shows you various pollution levels (it’s really interesting to see the levels spike when the toxin levels increase, like when the oven is on!), as well as the humidity, temperature and when the filters need replacing. The dome part can easily be lifted up to access the single part filter (provided solely by Dyson), which Dyson claims is capable of capturing gases and 99.95% of ultrafine particles in its activated carbon and glass HEPA layer. It’s one of the easier filters to replace as a result, even if it is a bit pricey. As a personal fan, the Dyson Pure Cool Me excels. By pushing its dome up or down, you can easily direct its air flow directly at you, or upwards for a room-cooling effect. It’s quiet in operation, making it a good desk or bedside table buddy, and its oscillation offers just enough movement to get a good breeze going. Originally launched alongside the Dyson V11 cordless vacuum cleaner, the Pure Cool Me is a personal fan, designed to keep you cool while you’re sitting at your desk.
Since its inception in 1978, Dyson has risen to become a true British household name and brand – all thanks to a relentless drive for invention and a refusal to give up.Performance: I was impressed with the cooling ability of this fan. Even on the lowest setting it provided noticeable cooling effects in my living room, which can get very hot as we have a large run of glazed doors that tend to trap heat. Using the night setting, my room stayed at a great temperature for sleep and the blades did not disturb me. Overview: This fan basically does it all – It’s a fan, a heater and a purifier all-in-one. So, if you’re looking for something all-singing-all-dancing, this is it. Dyson claims that this fan automatically senses particles and gases, capturing 99.95% of ultrafine particles, then pushes out purified air around the room (including formaldehyde, if that’s something that may concern you – although we’d hope not). This is helpful if you live somewhere where there’s lots of pollution, or if you suffer with hayfever. Dyson effortlessly combines efficient purification with cooling. If you want an all-in-one device, then there’s nothing else quite like it. For those who suffer severe allergy problems, or need a larger, more powerful air purifier, however, there are better options such the Vax Pure Air 300 Air Purifier, which is slightly more effective, but noisier. Also consider the Philips Air Purifier Anti-Allergen. Verdict
Functionality-wise, this fan is more basic than the Dyson. It has three speeds and can oscillate 180 degrees, if you choose, and there’s a sleep mode that keeps the fan on the lowest setting. But I loved this fan’s smart features. You can set timers and other automations, like getting the fan to turn on when the temperature reaches a certain level, Features: It’s just a fan, but it does have two speeds. The main feature, I would say, is that it looks great. Unlike the other models we tried, this one’s retro design is made from sleek metal, making it far less of an eyesore than your standard plastic tower model. If you’re big on aesthetics, you might like it, then, but if you value technical features or having more control, it won’t be for you. While Dyson can detect particulate matter and volatile organic compounds (VOCs are harmful chemicals in the air that can come from cleaning sprays or even old furniture), it doesn’t distinguish between the different pollutant sources. If you want a more in-depth look at what’s happening in your home, you need an air quality monitor such as the excellent Foobot. Dyson Pure Cool Link Desk – Performance Measuring air speed is difficult, since the Pure Cool Link Desk outputs a thin stream from all around its head; the effect is a pleasant cooling effect without the buffing and hard rush of air from a traditional bladed fan. Power consumption at 32W maximum and 4.1W minimum is very competitive.
A one-two personal fan and air-purifier combo
As there’s no purifier, naturally, this fan didn’t help my hayfever symptoms. In fact, some experts say that sleeping with a fan on can actually exacerbate symptoms by helping to circulate dust and allergens around the room. So, if you really suffer, I would recommend opting for a purifying fan. I’m still as impressed with Dyson’s fan design today, as I was on seeing the very first model. Getting rid of the traditional fan blades in the head, and leaving a halo that you can put your head through means that the Dyson Pure Cool Link Desk looks incredible. Certainly, this is every bit the high-end fan that you’d want to have on display. The only potential minor issue is in the middle of winter, when it’s unlikely that you’ll want the cooling effect of a fan blowing over you; you may need to reposition the Pure Cool Link in colder weather. Dyson Pure Cool Link Desk – Alexa You’re not limited to using the remote control, since this fan also hooks up to your Wi-Fi and can be controlled through the Dyson Link app. From here, you get access to all of the controls provided by the remote, so you don’t even have to get up to turn on your fan. The app lets you set a schedule, automatically turning the fan on or off to your pre-defined settings as you see fit. This can be handy to avoid the fan running when it isn’t required; in turn, this can extend the HEPA filter’s life. The voice control is also a useful feature for these ongoing working-from-home times; it was a great time saver to be able to turn the fan on and off from my seat without having to get up and faff about with it (yes there’s a remote, but it’s never to hand when you need it, is it?).
It’s not the most powerful fan we’ve used, even at its top speed setting – if you’re sat on the other side of a larger room, it’ll feel a bit lost. But it’s one of the few fans of its size that can take control of a smaller room without its output noise being too much of a distraction. It’s perfect for staying cool overnight as a result, without disturbing sleep. Features: I was impressed with the number of features, and the scope for customisation. Choose between three oscillation angles up to 350 degrees, or turn it off. There’s a night mode that runs the fan on a quieter setting (although you’ll sacrifice power) and a timer so you can turn it off after certain intervals between 15 minutes and nine hours. Still working from home and missing the office aircon? Forgotten what it's like to sleep through the night without sweating? Yup, the hot weather has finally hit – so it's time to invest in a fan for your home. It'll help you get some kip at night and stay comfortable during the day. For air purification, Dyson doesn’t quote any Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) figures. Instead, the company says that the fan removes 99.95% of particulate matter (PM) below 0.1µm, and it can capture harmful gasses and eliminate odours. PM can penetrate lungs, causing respiratory problems and is a source of allergens.
Aesthetics: This one’s a little chunkier than the Pure Cool model to account for the humidifier, and a little heavier. (But really, that’s to be expected!) Namesake and founder James Dyson initially dreamed of a bagless vacuum cleaner; and through years of hard work and many failures, he eventually realised this dream. Today, the hugely successful Dyson product range has extended to include hairdryers, fans and air purifiers as well.
