"Usher Breaks Records With 'Confessions' Debut". Billboard. Nielsen Business Media . Retrieved 2009-01-30. The performances from Pharrell and Shay are both great. Sure, Pharrell's singing has that occasional moment where it stumbles a bit, but his verses are great, and when his singing is good, he stands well on his own as a singer, with Shay also getting a few great rap verses in there to prove himself as a valuable member of the group, which tends to be debated amongst N*E*R*D fans. There's also some great guest performances throughout the album. Lee Harvey has a great guest verse on "Lapdance", with a memorable and catchy hook done in part from Vita to boot. Kelis and Pusha T both have great parts on "Truth or Dare", and Malice has a good guest verse on "Am I High" Browne, David (2002-03-11). "Music Review – In Search Of... (2002) - N.E.R.D." And at the end of my call with Hugo, I ask him a pretty standard question, to get a gist of just how much the project resonates with him still. I asked Chad what In Search Of... means to him today.

Recording Industry Association of America". RIAA. Archived from the original on 2015-10-19 . Retrieved 2012-03-29. Leeds, who met Pharrell and Hugo while both he and Walker worked at Def Jam in the mid ‘90s, started touring with N.E.R.D. from around their third show onward. The N.E.R.D. years took him to Donatella Versace’s home for dinner one night, and even opening for David Bowie on a whim. But while he was just getting up to speed on The Neptunes’ career in hip-hop after working as tour manager for heavy metal bands in years prior, those first few N.E.R.D. gigs marked his first time hearing the album himself. And he insists he still hears the intro to “Brain” in his head every now and then. Browne, David (March 11, 2002). "In Search Of..." Entertainment Weekly. New York. Archived from the original on May 10, 2017 . Retrieved February 14, 2016. Pharrell had the Lexus at the time and we would just vibe out, man. And we would go to the clubs once in a while. But we wanted to do our own thing outside the clubs,” he says. “We made music for the clubs as the Neptunes, but I think we were just making stuff that was another dimension. We tried to make another world with N.E.R.D. The experience was all experimental as far as we were just making music, having fun. Enjoying each other’s company, making music at the same time and making interesting records that people hadn’t heard of.” Paige adds that while their third album in 2008’s Seeing Sounds influenced his life on a deeper level than In Search Of…, “N.E.R.D. is a perfect example of freedom of expression and so much more beyond that, and I can’t really put any of their albums in a genre, and I don’t want to.”

Making everything else possible

It didn’t take much time at all for this trio to create magic, as the band’s debut record, In Search Of…, had an undeniable impact on the culture that lasts to this day. Pharrell takes the reins as the primary vocalist—both singing and rapping—while Shay Haley often serves a more complimentary role, but one that shouldn’t be overlooked. Both ooze charisma and confidence by the boatload, and while you’ll be hard-pressed to find any “bars” on here, there’s no shortage of ingenious songwriting. Overtly sexual, rebellious, and in-tune to the realities of street life, In Search Of... embodies multifaceted and complex characters trying to navigate the equally confusing world its narrators reside in.
