About this deal

People I know of my age who are now in a position finally to buy “a nice car” are inevitably drawn to Astons. Some of it is to do with Britishness, some of it with Bond fantasies, but largely, I suspect, it’s the influence of this most iconic of toy cars. Without Corgi we might not have Aston Martin. Well over 50 years later the Corgi Aston Martin DB5 has appeared in a total of seven James Bond films; Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), Goldeneye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), Casino Royale (2006), Skyfall (2012) and SPECTRE (2015). This car remains the largest selling toy car Corgi ever produced, and it’s still going. Corgi is still selling remakes of its Aston Martin DB5 and demand is still high. Without a doubt Corgi’s best known model, and a part of James Bond history. There was no time for the usual modelling process involving painstaking drawings, beautiful 1:12-scale masters in hardwood, resin casts, and accurate reduction by pantograph to produce the moulds for diecasting.

What I really think about... supercars, America, foreigners, car launches, Top Gear, the battle of the sexes and cars " After you have received the CORGI TOYS James Bond Aston Martin DB5 model, you are free to cancel at any time and you are under absolutely NO further obligation to buy anything else whatsoever, EVER! When we consider the high-tech air superiority fighters which patrol the world's skies so effectively today, it's often hard to believe that the first aircraft in this series of aerial dominators first took to the skies almost 110 years ago, one which whilst still primitive in design was intended to prey on other aircraft. https://www.driving.co.uk/news/james-may-why-the-corgi-james-bond-aston-martin-db5-is-the-most-significant-car-ever/

Together with new box artwork and eager approval from ATV (although, according to Van Cleemput, no royalties were paid for a licence), the effect in 1965 was electric. The standard Volvo sold 315,000 examples in three years, but the Saint version shipped 321,000 in its first nine months, and went on to sell 1.2m. “I think I had a minor coup [with it] in my export sales days,” recalled Katz. “It sold extraordinarily well.” This was a dream toy for kids of all ages and sizes. It’s only issue was its colour. ‘ Why was it painted gold’ instead of silver like in the movie? Apparently, Corgi’s marketing team didn’t like the proposed silver finish from the movie and decided to paint it gold to reflect the movie’s title instead. Corgi's desire to include ever-more exciting features was almost feverish. Opening doors, sliding seats, carefully detailed interiors… the list of innovations goes on and on. And who can forget Corgi's smooth ‘Glide-O-Matic’ working suspension or legendary jewelled headlights? However, the real breakthrough came with the impact of film and television. All of a sudden, the vehicles we saw on the small screen and at the cinema were top of our lists, resulting in a swathe of amazing Corgi Toys such as the Batmobile, Saint’s Volvo and of course James Bond's Aston Martin DB5 with its amazing array of gadgets.

Look, childhood is formative, and those of us who love cars loved them first as die-cast toys. In the first year of production more than 2.5m Corgi Bond Astons were sold, making it the fastest-selling car of all time. It was revised and enlarged in 1968 ( No 270, toy nerds) and is about to be relaunched again as a 50th-anniversary tribute. It has therefore been more formative than any other toy car. QED. I for one would love to have another example of this model waiting for me on Christmas morning. Return of 'The Cooler King' Corgi Model Club models are exact facsimiles of original Corgi Toys. When in mint condition and with their original box, original examples can fetch hundreds of Pounds at auction, making collecting Corgi Toys of the 1960s and early 1970s out of reach for many of us. That is, until now! It is our mission to make collecting Corgi Toys as affordable as possible – introducing these fantastic models to a new generation of die-cast model collectors. My first job was designing a plastic roof for a horsebox,” he says. “But I loved experimenting; I designed a lorry with a working tail-lift in 1962 and, although they never made it, it got the attention of [Mettoy founder] Philipp Ullmann.” Making for an ideal present for the sophisticated Bond fan in your life, this beautiful model is now only available in limited quantities and may well have been returned to Q Branch by Christmas.

The model was released in time for the 1965 Christmas market and Corgi found it was unable to keep up with demand, and some toy shop shelves were reported to being cleared of this new must-have toy within minutes. Corgi sold over 3.9 million cars, which was their highest selling car and won the UK toy of the year award, so guess painting it gold instead of silver may have been the right choice. It’s most popular and endearing feature was the working ejector seat. Pushing a button on the side made the roof spring open to eject a mini-plastic bad guy from the passenger seat. Kids of all ages relished in sending this little figurine into space, and the car came with quite a powerful spring. Those figurines got some serious height.

In 1977, Bond-car mania exploded once more when Corgi issued its ingenious model of the submarine Lotus Esprit, this time coordinated in advance in partnership with Eon Productions to hit the shops the week the film opened. Being part of the Corgi Model Club is more like a flexible membership rather than a subscription. There is zero commitment. In addition, we have introduced a number of initiatives to make collecting our models as easy and cost effective as possible: One of the first suggestions offered was a range of models which rarely receive much attention here on Diecast Diaries, but could hardly be more perfect for this time of year. This one was more in relation to an appropriate gift for us to give to younger members of our family, but models which are most definitely designed to stand the test of time. We all know that we wouldn't let inquisitive young minds loose with the latest limited edition model addition to our collections, but we would love to see them playing for hours on end with a range of models designed specifically for them. As it was, the baddie’s supersonic upward trajectory was arrested only by the ceiling (unless you played with your toys outside, in which case he was in your neighbour’s garden), from where he would fall to the dark and heavily patterned carpet that characterised the 1960s and 1970s and become invisible. He was, you remember, less than an inch long and not even a complete man, all of his legs below the shins having being sacrificed to make way for the mechanism. From the Hoover bag he made his way to the dustbin and a rubbish tip far, far away.

Everyone seems to have their own favourite Bond, and which they think is the best Bond movie, and who they believe is the most beautiful Bond girl.
