About this deal

The base model falls in line with our expectations, but pleasantly, the higher-end model is slightly cheaper than expected. The port selection on this little guy is better than expected, two full size USB A ports, one on either side of the machine as well as a multipurpose USB C port that is used to power the device as well as to drive any external displays. I found myself wishing that it had an additional USB C port instead of one of the USB A’s as you will need an adaptor to be able to power the machine and output to an external monitor simultaneously. Both of the USB A ports are USB 3.0 which is nice.

Playing a 1080p video on YouTube at 60 frames per second was no problem at all, without a crush. Combined with this display, it was fantastic too. I also didn’t encounter any major bugs, issues or strange experiences with Windows 10. Everything worked as expected. Follow the Windows installer... Make sure you select Windows 11 Home or you'll not be able to activate it unless you had Windows 10 Pro installed. You have provided, truthfully, one of the BEST arguments against running Windows at all: “…you have 64G for windows and each time you have a big windows update, you may have to clean your disk…It is possible i guess to fit win10 on 64G but with time i think it is too small to maintain the system…”It’s not the most impressive sound in a device, small as it is, the audio is good enough to watch a movie, YouTube clip or even listen to music. Unfortunately this time there was one key piece of hardware that wasn’t supported out of the box: WiFi. Interestingly, Bluetooth was detected. Having the TDP set to 15W will help conserve battery power. Very high performance may not be required for tasks like web browsing or working with office documents. You can of course increase the TDP to 20W to match the gaming handhelds for more performance, but at the cost of using more battery power. PassMark But according to a report from DroiX, the 4th-gen model could be powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor with Radeon 780M integrated graphics, and that could mean it will be able to handle many modern games… assuming you want to play them on a mini-laptop that’s not much bigger than the game controller you’ll probably want to plug in.

When I ran Geekbench in fanless mode, I got a single-core score of 3035 and a multi-core score of 5777. I turned on the fan and ran the test again, and the scores were lower, probably because the system was warmer than it had been when I started. GPD’s last few products have been handheld gaming PCs including the GPD Win 4 and GPD Win Max 2. But the company also makes handhelds and mini-laptops designed for general purpose usage rather than just gaming, and it looks like there could be several new models on the way.

So I turned off the computer for a few minutes to let it cool down, started it up again and ran the test again. This time the single-core test score jumped up to 3159, but the multi-core score was 5755, a little lower than it had been with the fan disabled. Given how horrible most laptop cameras are… and how ubiquitous smartphone cameras are, I suspect this is a feature most people won’t miss. But it’s still probably something you should be aware of. If you are planning to get this as a primary device just because it’s cheap for a laptop then scrap your plan. You won’t be able to perform a lot of tasks which you can on a laptop of the same price range. There are not enough ports and space to keep all your content and media. Although the device is very attractive, heavy tasks will be a nightmare on it. One thing the GPD Win 2 isn’t good for? Recording video: there’s no webcam. That means you won’t be making any Skype or Hangouts video calls, broadcasting any Twitch or YouTube live streams, or recording any videos on this device unless you connect a USB camera. The laptop’s 1920 x 1200 pixel display looks pretty great, but you may have to adjust the DPI scaling if you want to fit more content on the screen at once… or if you want to fit less content and make text and images large enough to see without squinting.

But it’s also very much a niche device. Some people are never going to be happy typing on a computer with keys this small. The display is too small to comfortably fit a lot of information at once. And GPD’s choice of placement for the optical touch sensor is less than ideal. If you can't change the resolution, it means the graphic driver did not install correctly (this has happened to me once). Run "Device Manager" select Microsoft Display Adapter. select the driver yourself from the Graphics folder within the drivers folder on the USB. The GPD XD Plus is powered by a Mediatek MT8176 processor running at 2.1Ghz, the graphics chip is a PowerVR GX6250 running at 600Mhz. There is 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. The storage can be expanded with a MicroSD Card. The XD Plus has supports 2/5Ghz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. Keep in mind that Geekbench is a test that only takes a few minutes to run. I suspect the differences may be greater for benchmarks or applications that require a lot of horsepower for a longer sustained period of time. Now The Phawx reports the Win Mini display will also have a 120 Hz refresh rate and will come with a choice of two processor options: Top-tier models will have an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor with Radeon 780M graphics based on RDNA 3 architecture, while entry-level configurations will have a Ryzen 5 7440U chip (I’m not sure what GPU this version will have). As an Android Gaming Tablet it also handles this very well. The GPD XD Plus supports the Vulkan API, it means apps are more optimised and run faster. It can run most systems from the 70’s up to the 2000’s This is the operating system that took the longest to boot, but when it did I was pleasantly surprised to see that scaling seemed to be set to 200 percent. Text, graphics, and everything else looked great. I didn’t need to squint to see anything and I didn’t need to adjust any font or display settings.
