[ PubMed abstract] Heinz Body Anemia: A condition in which the oxidation of the red blood cell is interfered with, creating a low blood cell count. The different forms of iron in supplements contain varying amounts of elemental iron. For example, ferrous fumarate is 33% elemental iron by weight, whereas ferrous sulfate is 20% and ferrous gluconate is 12% elemental iron [ 27]. Fortunately, elemental iron is listed in the Supplement Facts panel, so consumers do not need to calculate the amount of iron supplied by various forms of iron supplements.

Mild deficiency or storage iron depletion: Serum ferritin concentrations and levels of iron in bone marrow decrease.As we have seen, the whole foods that are richest in iron are spleen and blood. If you can’t find them fresh an alternative would be freeze-dried or dehydrated spleen or blood, which are often easier to find. Iron is a mineral that is naturally present in many foods, added to some food products, and available as a dietary supplement. Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, an erythrocyte (red blood cell) protein that transfers oxygen from the lungs to the tissues [ 1]. As a component of myoglobin, another protein that provides oxygen, iron supports muscle metabolism and healthy connective tissue [ 2]. Iron is also necessary for physical growth, neurological development, cellular functioning, and synthesis of some hormones [ 2, 3].

Presence of reticulocytes (immature RBCs) – using special stains these cells can be distinguished from normal (mature) RBCs, and by determining their number it is possible to gauge how regenerative the anaemia is. Hemoglobin and hematocrit tests are the most commonly used measures to screen patients for iron deficiency, even though they are neither sensitive nor specific [ 5, 7, 17]. Often, hemoglobin concentrations are combined with serum ferritin measurements to identify IDA [ 7]. Hemoglobin concentrations lower than 11 g/dL in children under 10 years of age, or lower than 12 g/dL in individuals age 10 years or older, suggest IDA [ 8]. Normal hematocrit values are approximately 41% to 50% in males and 36% to 44% in females [ 18]. Recommended Intakes Dietary iron has two main forms: heme and nonheme [ 1]. Plants and iron-fortified foods contain nonheme iron only, whereas meat, seafood, and poultry contain both heme and nonheme iron [ 2]. Heme iron, which is formed when iron combines with protoporphyrin IX, contributes about 10% to 15% of total iron intakes in western populations [ 3-5].Table 1 lists the current iron RDAs for nonvegetarians. The RDAs for vegetarians are 1.8 times higher than for people who eat meat. This is because heme iron from meat is more bioavailable than nonheme iron from plant-based foods, and meat, poultry, and seafood increase the absorption of nonheme iron [ 5]. The clinical implications of iron deficiency in people with chronic diseases are not clear. Even mild anemia of chronic disease is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization and mortality in elderly people [ 81]. Two prospective observational studies found that iron deficiency in patients with objectively measured heart failure was associated with an increased risk of heart transplantation and death, and this association was independent of other well-established prognostic factors for poor outcomes, including anemia [ 82, 83]. However, an analysis of NHANES data on 574 adults with self-reported heart failure found no association between iron deficiency and all-cause or cardiovascular mortality [ 60]. Injectable Ironis done through a syringe and put directly into your cat’s vein or done through an IV bag over a longer period-of-time. Injectable iron will need to be done by your vet on a monthly basis until the issue is resolved. While iron supplements can benefit cats with deficiencies, overdosing can lead to side effects like gastrointestinal upset, dark stools, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, iron toxicity. It’s essential to follow the recommended dosage and monitor your cat for any adverse reactions.

Knowing whether the anaemia is regenerative or not will help in narrowing down the likely underlying cause of the anaemia. Regenerative anaemias are usually caused by either an increased breakdown of the RBCs (termed haemolysis) or by blood loss (eg, from bleeding excessively). Non-regenerative anaemias are usually caused by an underlying problem in the bone marrow preventing or interfering with the normal production of RBCs. Specific causes include: Blood loss anaemia: Hemochromatosis, a disease caused by a mutation in the hemochromatosis (HFE) gene, is associated with an excessive buildup of iron in the body [ 3, 39, 99]. About 1 in 10 Whites carry the most common HFE mutation (C282Y), but only 4.4 Whites per 1,000 are homozygous for the mutation and have hemochromatosis [ 100]. The condition is much less common in other ethnic groups. Without treatment by periodic chelation or phlebotomy, people with hereditary hemochromatosis typically develop signs of iron toxicity by their 30s [ 3]. These effects can include liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, heart disease, and impaired pancreatic function. The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases recommends that treatment of hemochromatosis include the avoidance of iron and vitamin C supplements [ 39]. Symptoms of anemia due to iron deficiency in cats usually vary depending on several factors including the severity of anemia, the cat’s age, weight, and medical history.

Treatment

In some severe cases of iron deficiency anemia, a cat may require a blood transfusion. Your cat will need to be hospitalized for a short while afterward to prevent adverse reactions. Wrap Up Serum ferritin concentration, a measure of the body's iron stores, is currently the most efficient and cost-effective test for diagnosing iron deficiency [ 11-13]. Because serum ferritin decreases during the first stage of iron depletion, it can identify low iron status before the onset of IDA [ 7, 9, 14]. A serum ferritin concentration lower than 30 mcg/L suggests iron deficiency, and a value lower than 10 mcg/L suggests IDA [ 15]. However, serum ferritin is subject to influence by inflammation (due, for example, to infectious disease), which elevates serum ferritin concentrations [ 16]. In addition to or in place of a transfusion, your vet may recommend treatments like antibiotics or immunosuppressive medication. Some cats will benefit from iron supplementation. Supplementation is done both by oral means where supplements with bioavailable forms of Fe are used or parenterally including via intramuscular (such as using iron dextran), intravenous and subcutaneous injection.

Untreated, anaemia can be a debilitating disease, and if severe can be life-threatening. Unfortunately, cats are particularly prone to the development of anaemia. This is partly because their RBCs have a shorter lifespan (around 70 days) than many other animals (around 110-120 days in dogs and humans) – this means they have a higher turnover of RBCs and anaemia can, therefore, develop quite rapidly if anything interferes with this. Also, cats suffer from a number of different diseases and infections that can cause anaemia. Types of anaemia Cats may require iron supplements for several reasons, most commonly related to conditions that cause iron-deficiency anemia. Here are some common scenarios where iron supplementation might be necessary: It’s crucial not to give cats human iron supplements without consulting a veterinarian. Human formulations might contain higher dosages or other ingredients that could be harmful or toxic to cats. Always choose products specifically designed for feline use. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA): Average daily level of intake sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97%–98%) healthy individuals; often used to plan nutritionally adequate diets for individuals Frequent blood donors have an increased risk of iron deficiency [ 5]. In the United States, adults may donate blood as often as every 8 weeks, which can deplete iron stores. About 25%–35% of regular blood donors develop iron deficiency [ 52]. In a study of 2,425 blood donors, men who had given at least three and women who had given at least two whole-blood donations in the previous year were more than five times as likely to have depleted iron stores as first-time donors [ 53]. A clinical trial of iron supplementation found that of 215 adults who had donated a unit of blood within the past 3–8 days, those randomized to take an iron supplement (37.5 mg/day elemental iron from ferrous gluconate) for 24 weeks recovered their lost hemoglobin and iron in less than half the time of those not given the supplement [ 52]. Without iron supplementation, two-thirds of the donors had not recovered the iron they lost, even after 24 weeks. People with cancer

While home treatments can be helpful, it’s important to always work closely with your vet when managing your cat’s health and to also inform your vet about any home treatments you’re trying. Some treatments might conflict with or reduce the effectiveness of the treatments your vet prescribes, so be sure to always update your vet before changing your cat’s diet or other lifestyle elements. Clean your surroundings. Fleas can thrive not just on pets themselves, but also on properties. They can be on the places that your cat frequents, such as her bedding, your carpets, and even your beds, chairs, and sofas. Wash these items to kill the fleas. You can also kill the fleas directly with diatomaceous earth or salt. But be sure to vacuum them up once they are dead. If you don’t clean your surroundings, your cat will be perpetually vulnerable to fleas, and therefore be vulnerable to flea anemia as well.
