Another recurrent feature of Manchester music has been a sense of humor that has likewise defined the larger city’s recognized personality. This wit — irreverent, rude, raw, sarcastic, subversive — again has its roots in the consolidation of the working class bloc during the industrial revolution. Serving to provide a relief escape from the long working hours and urban squalor were the Music Halls, which offered satirical songs and skits that spoke to these hardships while they also often commented upon the exploitations of the ruling classes.

Transport has always featured in Manchester’s history. Manchester gave birth to the world’s first railway line which opened in 1830. Victoria Station is one of the world’s oldest continuously operating stations and it is still the second largest station in the UK. The Submarine A once-dominant source of entertainment in the Manchester area, Music Hall music and humor continued to linger on into the 20th century, morphing into new forms and arenas. This Manchester image would make a stunning statement piece for your home and office or a unique gift for friends and family. Although too eclectic in styles and genres to be defined by a singular sound or defining principle, Manchester music, over time, has exhibited some recurring features that suggest certain commonalities and regional distinctions. The city’s emergence as the world’s premier industrial city in the early part of the 19th century has molded much of what has subsequently become Manchester’s culture and character. Its spirit of dissent and defiance is rooted in the rise of organized labor during these times; indeed, Manchester was home to Friedrich Engels while he wrote The Conditions of the Working Class in England in 1844.If you are familiar with the drinking habits of the English, then you’d know to expect this: there are LOTS of pubs in Manchester. I don’t know if there is any list that will be able to list literally all the pubs interspersed in the city, but this one does a good job (yes, visitmanchester.com is my go-to for most recommendations). Where would we be without Emmeline Pankhurst, Moss Side-born and the mother of the Suffragette movement? Manchester’s Pankhurst led the British suffragette movement in the early 1900s and campaigned tirelessly for the women’s right to vote. Coronation Street Madchester hairstyles incorporated Shaun Ryder’s centre-parted ‘curtains’ and Bez’s short crop. Kids wanting something smarter went to Andrew Berry on Tib Street or in the Hacienda’s basement.

If not for the pop-flavored tunes, sweet vocal harmonies, and camp Mancunian accents that have always carried their songs, the Bee Gees would probably have been just another pop or disco group. However, by harnessing both of these genres simultaneously — thanks to their own upbringing in the midst of the Brit-beat scene, as well as the influence of soul producer Arif Mardin who introduced disco rhythms to their writing — the Gibb brothers were able to craft a fusion of forces that shook up the music world and continues to have seismic after-effects to this day. The area around Canal Street became one of the UK’s most thriving and active gay communities in the early 90s, making a point of referring to itself as a ‘gay village’. Instrumental in this was the opening of Bar Manto, which pointedly had glass walls on the front so everyone could see what was going on, a pointed move away from the previously furtive nature of the scene. Queer As Folk Speaking of non-Indian food, there are quite a few contenders as well that offer different kinds of food experiences. If you are looking for an upscale place: I greatly enjoyed my dining experience in Albert’s Shed and also the fact that it has beautiful ambience and is by the canal! I have had Christmas dinners at Browns Manchester and Marco’s New York Italian MediaCity UK. The food at both these places was decent. I did quite enjoy the turkey, to be honest. I had another fancy dinner in Grand Pacific. Honestly, I was looking at places to dine at and was biased about this place because it has a stunning ambience! The food was alright. Perhaps mindful of PJ Harvey and Mambo Taxi’s exhortations not to dress to satisfy the male gaze, Britpop women swerved tight dresses and high heels for jeans, tops and trainers. Madan, Debbie Smith, Louise Wener, Justine Frischman were strong and articulate role models. One set of female fans, known as the Fairies, were distinctive in outfits topped off with fairy wings. Some of the other fun ones I have been to are The Courtyard, Twenty Twenty Two (where you can also play ping pong!) and The Paramount, although, it’s very important for me to mention that The Paramount belongs to the Wetherspoons chain, and several people, including me, are boycotting Wetherspoons due to their absolute horrible treatment of their employees during the Covid 19 pandemic. I am not actually going to pubs during this pandemic in a city as crowded as Manchester, but if I do, Wetherspoons is definitely not going to be one of them.
